Listening to our tenants
The award-winning Our North Tyneside Voice website hosts all council consultations, with a ‘council tenants’ hub for housing-related activities.
Register at haveyoursay.northtyneside.gov.uk and we’ll get in touch whenever there’s an opportunity to get involved. As of March 2026, 741 tenants had registered (up from 587 at the same time last year).
The ‘Have Your Say’ displays in our six community hubs and libraries have paper copies of all consultations and key documents.
During 2025-26….
- Our new Tenant Engagement Strategy was published in October
- 532 consultation responses were received on the Neighbourhood and Community Promise, Environmental Crime and Anti-social Behaviour Policy, future kitchen choices, cleaning services in communal blocks, Aids and Adaptations Policy, Vulnerabilities and Reasonable Adjustment Policy
- 102 tenants came for advice at seven community drop-ins
- 24 tenants attended focus groups on the issue of not getting access to homes when we request it; and a new online tenancy system
- 35 tenants attended our annual event in September
- 6 tenants joined us for a day to review our empty homes process
- We promoted ways to have your say to 71 tenants at six of our North Tyneside Living sites (for tenants aged 60+)
- We worked with a group of young tenants to co-design a new ‘young tenant handbook’
- We did a self-assessment of our engagement work, based on national standards from the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS)
Tenant panels improving services for all
Our 36 panel volunteers give their time to working with us to improve services for all tenants and we really appreciate everything they do. They review and discuss performance, put forward ideas, ask questions and challenge us to do better. All meeting notes are published on the Our North Tyneside Voice website. This year, their work has included:
- Landlord Panel: This more formal panel scrutinises the service against national standards, examines overall performance and budget proposals, oversees progress on meeting essential targets and directs areas for further examination
- Estates and Communities Panel: Development of the Neighbourhood and Community Promise, our anti-social behaviour approach and the associated letters, the good neighbour guide leaflet, service standards and estate walkabouts
- Repairs and Investment Panel: Progress on essential home safety checks, new kitchen options, issues with disrepair claims, encouraging access to homes when we need it, and setting repairs service performance targets
- North Tyneside Living Panel: Review of the tenant handbook and tenancy agreement, safeguarding around volunteering arrangements, health and safety matters, and details for a trial of new laundry arrangements
- Leaseholder Panel: This newer panel has met twice and looked at communal block maintenance, service standards, estates and neighbourhood matters, and reviewed the leaseholder handbook

Speech bubble: “I feel very lucky that North Tyneside Council holds regular meetings to engage with their tenants and I have the opportunity to discuss changes to policies which affect me, with council managers and other tenants, before they are implemented.” Hilary, tenant panel member
