Pellets washing up on beaches
Following the vessel collision at the Port of Tyne, plastic pellets known as ‘nurdles’ have been reported washing up on North Tyneside beaches.
We are working alongside our partners across the region to coordinate clean-up as soon as possible.
The public health risk is considered to be very low. The pellets are not toxic but can pose a risk to wildlife and other animals if ingested.
In the meantime, the public are advised to avoid handling the pellets and keep dogs on leads. We will be sharing this message on social media and temporary signage will be placed on site to alert residents and visitors.
