Statement of accessibility for this website

Accessibility statement for North Tyneside Council

This accessibility statement applies to the main council website — www.northtyneside.gov.uk.

It also lists the accessibility of third-party systems and websites.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We’re working hard to ensure that as much of our website as possible can be accessed and understood by all however we are aware that some parts of the website are not currently fully accessible, including:

  • Some of our PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software.
  • Some users may find some of the content difficult to understand.

We have a plan in place to identify and rectify all these issues and will be regularly reviewing our progress. But if you require any additional help accessing any of the information on our website while we are working to resolve these issues, please Contact us.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

North Tyneside Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AAA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

  • Some older PDFs that are necessary to provide services have not been created in an accessible format. We are replacing these with accessible HTML content when each document needs to be updated.
  • We are working with services to rewrite all content so it is readable, and understandable, by the vast majority of the public

Third party systems and websites

These services use different technical platforms. We — or the supplier — have styled some of them to look like our website.

Disproportionate burden

North Tyneside Council believes our website should be accessible for everyone. We do not currently intend to claim disproportionate burden for any website content.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents. We are working to either fix these or replace them with accessible HTML pages and Open Text Document formats.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

  • We test all new page templates to make sure they meet WCAG guidelines.
  • We plan to move the website to a new platform. As part of this work we will fix outstanding accessibility issues.
  • We have developed a digital style guide. This provides accessible components for our developers to use.
  • We have produced guidance for staff to help them create accessible content.

Preparation of this accessibility statement
