Introduction

The purpose of this document is to set out North Tyneside Council’s (“The Authority”) expectations for Registered Providers (RPs) and other social landlords operating in the borough in respect of tenancy types, length, renewals, and tenancy management to ensure fair, sustainable, and locally responsive housing outcomes.

The Localism Act 2011 placed a duty on local authorities to produce a Tenancy Strategy; Housing and Planning Act (including flexible/fixed‑term tenancy provisions); Regulation by the Regulator of Social Housing, plus relevant obligations under equality, homelessness, planning, and environmental law.

The Tenancy Strategy applies to all Registered Providers operating in North Tyneside, Authority housing stock, and partners delivering affordable housing in the Borough. Registered Providers are expected to have regard for this Tenancy Strategy when developing their tenancy policies.
