Types of Anti-Social Behaviour 

Examples of Anti-Social Behaviour 

Violence, abuse, intimidation, threatening behaviour and harassment    Threats to cause and/or harm to an individual, persistent behaviours which cause alarm, fear, distress and/or upset 
Noise nuisance  

Where there is noise from persistent dog barking, persistently loud music during the day and the night 

DIY during unsociable hours and noise from house and car alarms 

 

Communal Areas Nuisance  Where youths congregate and/or loiter within housing blocks and are causing rowdy and/or threatening behaviour or vandalism 
Animal Related Nuisance  Animals fouling communal areas or not under proper control 
Environmental Crime  Fly tipping, dog fouling, litter, damaging trees, abandoning cars, graffiti and holding bonfires 
Drugs, substance or alcohol abuse  Alcohol related ASB. Use of, supply and cultivation of illegal drugs is criminal offence and can cause ASB.

Glossary of terms used in the policy 

 

Anti-social behaviour or ASB  Behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to people outside the person’s household 
Breach  When the terms of an Order have not been kept 
Closure Notice or Closure Order  Legal powers used to temporarily close a property where there is serious nuisance or disorder 
Complainant   The person who is reporting ASB  
Community Protection Notice or CPN  A formal legal notice requiring a person or business to stop behaviour that is unreasonable, ongoing and negatively affecting others 
Community Protection Warning letter or CPW  A written warning explaining that behaviour must stop, or further legal action may be taken 
Demotion of Tenancy  A court order that reduces a tenant’s rights because of anti-social behaviour 
Environmental Crime  illegal actions that damage the local environment, such as littering, fly tipping, dog fouling, graffiti or abandoning vehicles 
Fixed Penalty Notice or FPN  A fine issued for certain offences (for example littering or dog fouling) instead of going straight to court 
Fly tipping  Illegally dumping waste on land without permission 
Hate Crime  Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on a person's disability or perceived disability; race or perceived race; or religion or perceived religion; or sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation or transgender identity or perceived transgender identity
