Physical and enriching activities

Physical activity is a core requirement of all HAF provisions, with every programme incorporating at least one hour of physical activity each day.

North Tyneside benefits from a strong network of experienced providers delivering a wide range of structured sports and activities, including tennis, football, dodgeball, and gym-based sessions. These activities are complemented by more creative and informal opportunities to stay active, for example, photography clubs, incorporate physical movement through walking activities.

Many programmes also venture beyond their primary venues, making use of the borough’s local environment and amenities. This not only increases levels of physical activity but also encourages children to engage with their local surroundings and develop a greater sense of community connection.

During the summer programme, three North Tyneside schools attended a funded residential visit to High Borrans Outdoor Education Centre in the Lake District, which is managed by the Council. The residential experience provided children with opportunities to participate in a wide range of outdoor and adventurous activities, including ghyll scrambling, canoeing, and high ropes courses. These experiences are particularly impactful for many participants, offering a chance to try activities they may not otherwise access. School staff supported the visits and consistently reported noticeable improvements in pupils’ confidence, independence, and social skills.

During the February half term pilot, we trialled funding two intensive beginner swimming courses, which proved highly popular. This initiative not only supports physical activity but also addresses the critical issue of water safety, an important life skill. In addition, free swimming sessions were made available to every eligible child across all HAF delivery periods.

The programme also broadened its cultural and educational offer by including family visits to The Centre for Life in Newcastle, an interactive science museum providing hands-on learning experiences.
