Supported Internships

You must have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) to access a Supported Internship.

Please speak with your Connexions adviser about this provision if you think it may be of interest.

Supported internships are a structured, work-based study programme for 16 to 24-year-olds with SEND, who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

A supported intern is in full-time education so are enrolled and supported by a learning provider but spends most of their learning time in a work placement with the support of a job coach.

As an intern is in education and their supported internship work placements are part of their course, a learner will not be paid for the Supported Internship.

Through their learning in the workplace, an internship provides an opportunity for young people to develop the skills needed for work.

Alongside their time with the employer, supported interns complete a study programme and, if appropriate, English and maths.

Supported internships run over an academic year.   They are seen as the last step before employment - an EHCP typically ceases at the end of a Supported Internship.

Follow support after an internship is accessed through the internship provider, or via the Connect to Work project delivered through the Working Well Hub in North Tyneside for those who are seeking employment after their internship.

There is an application and assessment process for a Supported Internship – you can find out more about Supported Internships in North Tyneside, and outside of the borough here:
