Carbon Net Zero Action Plan 2025

Update to our carbon net zero action plan

Key Government Policy Updates since 2024

The UK Government’s main climate change policy document is the Net Zero Strategy (Build Back Greener), which was published on 19 October 2021 and last updated in April 2022. It sets out policies and proposals for decarbonising all sectors of the UK economy to meet the government’s net zero target by 2050. The Net Zero Strategy builds on wider government policy, such as the ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution which was published on 18 November 2020.The Net Zero Strategy builds on wider government policy, such as the ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution which was published on 18 November 2020.

The Authority routinely monitors and tracks a range of national policies which continue to shape the Authority’s proportionate response to the Climate Emergency via its annually updated Action Plan. Since the completion of the first North Tyneside Climate Emergency in 2020, Government policies have developed to meet their own 2050 target. Examples of key National Policies since our last update are highlighted below:

  • Great British Energy Bill

This bill was introduced to establish Great British Energy, a publicly owned and clean energy company. The primary objectives include facilitating the production and supply of clean energy which will help accelerate investment in renewable energy, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil fuel energy production and improvements in energy efficiency.

  • Crown Estate Bill

This bill was introduced to remove limitations on the Crown Estates ability to borrow and invest, enabling it to expand activities such as decarbonizing the Crown Estates real estate portfolio and provide the “vital marine investment” needed to accelerate offshore wind capacity.

  • The UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy (Clean Energy Industries Sector)

The Strategy will address key priorities to accelerate the sectors that have the greatest potential to raise national levels of investment and productivity and the associated opportunities for net zero. The emphasis on the Clean Energy Sector will provide a clear mission to enable greater investment certainty, with long-term deployment plans for key technologies and updates to regulations to support growth
