Carbon Net Zero Action Plan 2025

Update to our carbon net zero action plan

Health and the Co-benefits from Net Zero action

Many of the climate actions outlined in this report can also benefit our health and wellbeing. There are a number of co-benefits which include improved air quality, increased physical activity, healthier diets, and better mental well-being. These benefits stem from policies and actions aimed at reducing carbon emissions, such as transitioning to cleaner transportation which reduces reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to electric vehicles leading to a decrease in air pollution. These in turn reduce respiratory illnesses and other health problems associated with poor air quality. Promoting active travel modes and creating more walkable and bikeable communities can encourage people to be more physically active, which has positive effects on cardiovascular health and overall well-being. Energy-efficient housing and green jobs related to net-zero initiatives can also improve health factors.

A Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

An assessment and report have been compiled by the Authority which summarises the potential impacts of climate change on the health and wellbeing of the population of North Tyneside. It identifies the potential negative health impacts of climate change and vulnerable populations most at risk. It is predicted that North Tyneside will see drier, hotter summers and wetter, warmer winters by 2080. These altered weather conditions will see more frequent hazards, such as flooding and heatwaves, occurring. Climate-related hazards will have direct health impacts on residents, as well as have the potential to disrupt the water, food, infrastructure, and supply systems we depend upon.
