North Tyneside Council is seeking views on proposed changes to parking in Whitley Bay, designed to make spaces more accessible and support local businesses.
Under the proposals, Pay and Display parking would be introduced at the Playhouse and Park Road car parks, operating from 9am to 6pm daily. The proposed charges, in line with other Council-managed car parks, are:
- £1.20 for one hour
- £2.40 for two hours
- £3.60 for three hours
- £4.80 for all-day parking
Tickets would be valid across other council-managed seafront car parks, allowing drivers to move between them. Free short-term parking would remain at Park Road car park for school drop-offs and pick-ups, and Blue Badge holders would continue to park for free in both locations.
The proposals form part of a borough-wide review to make parking more consistent and accessible, helping residents, visitors, and local businesses.
Another proposal is to introduce a £30 annual charge for the first resident parking permit in shared-use parking zones. These are areas where parking normally operates as pay and display, but residents with a valid permit are exempt from paying at the machine.
The changes are subject to a statutory consultation. Full details and how to provide feedback are available here.
