The council is running activities designed to raise awareness of environmental crime, support residents and highlight the work taking place every day to keep neighbourhoods clean and tackle illegally dumped waste.
The programme will shine a spotlight on the impact that fly-tipped waste has on communities, the cost of clearing illegally dumped rubbish, and the simple steps people can take to dispose of waste responsibly.
Residents will also have the opportunity to speak directly with council officers at two public information sessions. The first takes place outside Wallsend Library on Tuesday 13 October (10am to 1pm) and the second outside North Shields CommunityHub and Library on Thursday 22 October (10am to 1pm).
Both events will offer advice on waste and recycling services, enforcement activity and responsible waste disposal, alongside reuse amnesties where unwanted items can be passed on rather than thrown away.
Throughout the fortnight, residents will be able to meet council teams at a series of information events in Wallsend and North Shields, where officers will be on hand to provide advice on waste and recycling services, discuss enforcement activity and support reuse initiatives. Reuse amnesties will also take place, giving unwanted items a chance to find a new home rather than ending up as waste.
As well as highlighting the problem, the fortnight will focus on solutions. If you're looking at how you can dispose of waste in North Tyneside, you have a few options...
- Organising a bulky waste collection - You can arrange for a bulky waste collection online or by emailing 0345 2000 103 and our teams will arrange to come and take your waste away. Council tenants are entitled to two free bulky waste collections per year.
- Booking a slot at the Household Waste Recycling Centre - The centre is a reuse, recycling and waste disposal facility for North Tyneside residents only. Everyone visiting the Household Waste Recycling Centre needs an appointment. Some vehicles, this includes vans, will need a permit.
- Come to one of our reuse amnesty events
Information will also be promoted about the range of services available across the borough, including bulky waste collections, household waste recycling centres, reuse schemes and neighbourhood waste events. A mobile waste and recycling event is also will take place at Killingworth Depot on 24 October.
Alongside these activities, Community Protection Teams and wardens will maintain a highly visible presence in fly tipping hotspot areas across Wallsend and North Shields throughout the two-week period, carrying out enforcement work and supporting local communities.
