Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

We're celebrating the success of our apprentices and showcasing our commitment to helping residents of all ages and backgrounds start, grow and thrive in their careers.

Since 2017, we have supported 723 apprentices across the organisation and the wider borough.

Of these, 483 have been internal team members developing their careers with us, and 240 have been new external recruits, many taking their first steps into the world of work.

Supporting apprenticeships remains a key priority as part of our long-term commitment to developing skills, boosting employment, and opening even more opportunities for local people.

One of the many inspiring stories this year is Cole, a Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprentice working in a SEND school. Drawing on his own experience as a neurodiverse learner, Cole chose an apprenticeship so he could gain practical, hands‑on experience while training for a career that allows him to make a difference for children who need additional support.

“I wanted to be the person I didn’t have at school,” Cole said, reflecting on his motivation to join the profession. “Being in a SEND placement means I can bring my own understanding and experience to help others. The apprenticeship works really well for me. I struggle sitting at a computer all day, so learning on the job and being supported by tutors who understand my needs has made a huge difference.”

Cole’s learning provider and his placement school have both offered tailored support, which he says has helped him thrive. “Everyone’s been amazing. They take the time to get to know you and what support you need. Having an apprentice mentor has also made things a lot easier.”

We continue to work closely with businesses, schools and organisations across the borough to help even more people access high‑quality apprenticeship opportunities.

This partnership approach means more local employers are opening their doors to apprentices, knowing they’re supported by our advice and guidance.

As part of this week’s celebrations, our Employment and Skills Service will host the annual Get Up and Go Apprenticeship Fair on Saturday 14 February.

The popular event brings together employers and training providers with residents looking to start or progress their career. Attendees can explore vacancies, meet current apprentices, and get free careers advice.

Cllr Steven Phillips, Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills at North Tyneside Council, said: “Our apprentices bring talent, creativity and fresh thinking into our organisation and our borough every day. We’re incredibly proud of their achievements and of the support our teams and local employers provide.

“Apprenticeships change lives, and we’re committed to helping even more people access these opportunities.”
