Before I go to the library
I am going to the library
If I am nervous, I can ask questions first.
I can call (0191) 643 2075.
I can ask for a tour of the library.
About the library
In the library you can use the stairs, escalator or lift to get to the right floor.
In the lift you press button 1.
I can ask people who work at the library for help. I know who works at the library because they will wear a badge.
The library is a place where people talk, relax, read books or use computers.
I can reserve a time to use a computer if I want to be sure there will be one available when I want to use it.
The library has a café where you can buy drinks and other refreshments.
The library is also a place where people can ask for help and advice about council services, appointments with the customer services team, housing advice and health services.
Sometimes if there events at the library it might be noisy. If it is noisy I can talk to a librarian, and they can show me a quiet area.
How I can join the library
When I go into the library I will see a desk. If I need help, I can ask the staff at the desk. I can ask the staff at the desk to become a member of the library.
I will be asked to fill in a form, and give them my name, address, date of birth, telephone number and email address. If I need help completing the form, they can do this for me.
I will be given a library card and a PIN so I can use all of the library services, including the computers.
There are many places in the library where I can sit and read a book or play on my phone. There is free WiFi at the library and if I need help to connect to it, I can ask a member of staff.
I can choose 8 books to take home and borrow with my library card.
If I want to take books home, I can take them to the library desk or use the self-service machine. When I bring the book back, I can either hand them to the staff at the library desk or return them myself using the self-service machine.
The staff will stamp the book and tell me when to bring it back, and the machine will give me a ticket.
When I have finished, I will leave the library.
