Young people's mental health
Introduction
North Tyneside Council has been working together with partner organisations to develop a model to support the emotional wellbeing of children, young people and their families.
The Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Strategy sets out our ambition for the next five years, during which time we will be working together to:
- develop resilient children, young people, and families
- ensure easy access for children, young people and families to get the right mental health support at an early stage from universal services
- improve access to specialist mental health services for those children and young people who are at high risk of poor mental health

The Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Collaborative
Services from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and North Tyneside Council have come together in North Tyneside to form The Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Collaborative for children and young people up to the age of 18. The Collaborative meets daily (weekdays) to consider individual needs and work together to identify the most appropriate support.
As well as established services, such as Specialist CAMHS and The HIVE Team, newer services, such as The Connect Mental Health Support Teams for Schools and the Early Help Emotional Wellbeing Team, are part of The Collaborative. This means each request is considered by an experienced team of mental health and emotional wellbeing professionals to identify the best support both within these services and across wider services in North Tyneside.
Schools can continue to refer directly into The Connect MHST and GPs can continue to refer directly into the Early Help Emotional Wellbeing Team. The HIVE Team will continue to take referrals via their advice line.
All Request for Support forms must be completed by a professional with the consent and involvement of parents and children / young people (where possible).
We hope that this new approach will help families find the right support, at the right time, from the right professional, without the need for repeated referrals into different services. Please find our Privacy Notice here:
If the decision made by the collaborative is not felt to be appropriate, please email: MHEW.collaborative@northtyneside.gov.uk in the first instance. If the matter does not get resolved as you had hoped and you wish to make a formal complaint, please find information about how to do this here:
The Collaborative is here to help with mental health and emotional wellbeing support, but it isn’t the place for urgent safety concerns. If someone is in immediate danger or crisis, please call the Crisis Team on NHS 111 (Option 2). The Collaborative is not a route for safeguarding concerns. If you have a safeguarding concern about a child, please report it through the usual channels. Where there are concerns around physical health including low weight, please seek urgent medical care via GP, walk-in centre, urgent care or A&E.
Connect Mental Health Support Team
We know that children and young people may face additional barriers to their education including mental health concerns, and we want to ensure that all young people have support and that their families, schools and other professionals are able to provide the right support.
The Connect Mental Health Support Team works with 38 local schools to deliver low and moderate intensity interventions to support pupils with low mood, anxiety and poor self-esteem.
By working with our communities, schools, parents and carers and young people the service aims to encourage early treatment and prevention to decrease the number of children and young people requiring long term mental health support. This is done by providing information, advice, guidance, and support.
The team supports schools to develop their whole school approach to emotional wellbeing and signposts to other relevant services to ensure the needs of children and young people are met in a timely way.

The Early Help Emotional Wellbeing Team
The Emotional Wellbeing Team aims to improve children’s wellbeing and life chances, ensuring better outcomes for children, young people and their families.
The team:
- Provides information, advice, and tailored support
- Supports children and young people with low mood, anxiety, or low self-esteem
- Supports children and their families from aged 5 – 18, offering community-based support. This is either on a 1.2.1 basis or in a group setting.
- Have Children Wellbeing Practitioners who offer a bespoke CBT based intervention
By identifying needs early and providing appropriate support, families are more likely to experience a positive and stable future. Our approach to Early Help is proactive, strength-based, and rooted in community partnerships. It is designed to empower families and reduce the escalation of needs.
The HIVE Team
The HIVE (Health, Information and Advice, Virtual School, Emotional Wellbeing) Team in North Tyneside is a service that supports the physical, emotional and intellectual growth of children and young people, predominately with care experience.
It is a multi-disciplinary team who work together to help reduce the impact of complex trauma and aid recovery. It includes the Virtual School that promotes the education of children in care, children with a social worker and those previously in care (adopted and SGOs); an emotional wellbeing team for mental health support; and a health team that provides statutory health assessments and health passports for Care Leavers.

Kooth
Young People aged 11-18 from North Tyneside can access Kooth.com for support on any issues or concerns they may have.
Mental health problems affect about 1 in 8 children and young people. They include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder. They are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives.
With good mental health, children and young people do better in every way.
They:
- enjoy their childhoods
- are able to deal with stress and difficult times
- are able to learn better
- do better at school
- can navigate the online world they grew up with
This is why it is so important to look after your mental health
