In order to allow requests for restrictions to be assessed effectively it is important that we are provided with detailed and accurate information relating to parking issues.

Please note that wherever possible, we will try to identify the sources of any significant parking problems reported to us and tackle these through engagement with relevant parties rather than through the introduction of restrictions which may simply move problems elsewhere.

The parking restriction process
The process for implementing parking restrictions can potentially take over a year from the first assessment to the installation on site. We must follow a set process to legally make changes to the highway which includes periods of consultation.
Requests are assessed in chronological order by date received, this keeps the process fair for all residents. Once your restrictions request form has been received, we will aim to have it assessed within 6 months. You will be notified of the outcome of your request once the assessments have concluded. Unfortunately, due to the volume of requests received we are unable to provide updates on individual requests outside of this process.
We cannot complete a new assessment if we have already investigated the issue on your street within 24 months unless it can be demonstrated that parking patterns in the area in question have changed significantly since the last assessment.
If the criteria to implement restrictions are met, we will look to progress a proposal to help alleviate the identified issues. If we proceed, we will send a letter to properties in the area to share our proposals. You can confirm your support or opposition and share your comments with us during this informal consultation which lasts 2 weeks. This may take longer for permit parking proposals. We will then review the feedback received, seek the necessary approvals, and prepare paperwork.
If the proposal is generally supported, we will then progress to the statutory consultation period. This period lasts 21 days. During this time, notices are displayed on site, published on the council’s website, and advertised in the local press. This process ensures that any member of the public has the opportunity to review the proposal and submit comments or objections should they wish. Again, we will review the feedback received. At this point, we must respond to each objection individually. This process may take longer if we receive multiple objections. If there is strong support, we will prepare the needed paperwork to allow us to proceed despite any objections.
Finally, we will create the legal order that allows us to make these changes on the highway, manufacture signage, paint road markings, or process permits. This process can take around 3 months.
