Did you know that North Tyneside will be 70 years old in 2044?

North Tyneside 2044 is the name of a new long‑term vision for the future of the borough. It looks ahead 15–20 years to the platinum anniversary of North Tyneside and asks one big question: what kind of place should future generations inherit?

By 2044, everyday life will feel very different. We may need space for around 20,000 more people, children born today will be turning 18, and smarter transport, smarter homes and new technologies will shape how people live, work and move around North Tyneside. This work is about planning confidently for that future - not reacting to it.

A shared commitment to the future

North Tyneside 2044 is a vision for the whole place, shaped with residents, businesses, partners, community organisations and public services. It is being co‑produced through conversations across the borough, including the Big Community Conversation and direct engagement led by the Elected Mayor Karen Clark with the North Tyneside Strategic Partnership, local employers, voluntary and community organisations and public sector partners.

Everyone has a part to play in shaping the North Tyneside of tomorrow.

What the vision will do

North Tyneside 2044 will:

• Guide long‑term decisions and investment across the borough
• Bring partners together around shared priorities
• Help plan for major challenges such as ageing, inequality, housing, skills and climate
• Set direction for key areas including transport, housing, the economy, sustainability and local planning

The vision will draw on evidence from major strategies and the plans of partner organisations, ensuring it is rooted in real need and aligned with regional priorities.

What people are being asked to imagine

The engagement asks people to think about:

• What North Tyneside should look like when today’s children turn 18
• How the borough can be a place where people live well, age well, learn well and work well
• What neighbourhoods, transport, housing, the economy, the environment and community life should be like in 2044
• What people should be able to say about North Tyneside in the future

What happens next

Throughout 2026, engagement is taking place with residents, businesses and partners across the borough. 

This includes:

• The launch event of North Tyneside as a Marmot Place - with partners from local health, care and community organisations.
• The Big Community Conversation - online survey for everyone who lives or works in North Tyneside, asking people what you want the borough to look and feel like in 10 to 15 years’ time, with 17 in-person events during summer 2026
• A major stakeholder session in July, with the North Tyneside Strategic Partnership - key organisations from across the borough including partners like the police, fire service, schools, voluntary sector and NHS
• Business engagement events in July, September and November, with the Elected Mayor of North Tyneside Karen Clark speaking to major employers, small and medium-sized businesses and the North Tyneside Business Forum about North Tyneside 2044.
• Our State of the Area event in October, with a wide range of partners from across the borough, the Institute of Health Equity, and a key note speech on future technology. 

A draft of the vision will be produced in late 2026 and a final version will be launched in 2027.
