Solar panels installed at North Tyneside Council's Killingworth Depot are helping to reduce energy costs, cut carbon emissions and protect vital frontline services by generating significant savings that can be reinvested directly into services for residents.
The renewable energy system is reducing the council's reliance on electricity from the grid, helping to shield the authority from rising energy costs while supporting its commitment to environmental sustainability.
The solar panels have already generated more than 1 million kWh of clean electricity, enough to make a significant contribution to the depot's energy needs. The resulting savings of more than £300,000 have been reinvested into council services, helping to protect budgets and ensure vital services continue to be delivered for residents.
As councils across the country continue to face increasing financial pressures, projects that reduce day-to-day operating costs play an important role in protecting services while also contributing to climate goals.
Councillor Willie Samuel, Cabinet Member responsible for Environmental Sustainability, said:
"The solar panels at our Killingworth site are delivering real benefits for our residents. By generating more of our own electricity, we're reducing energy costs and protecting council budgets from rising utility prices.
"Every pound we save on energy is a pound that can be directed towards the services people rely on, from supporting vulnerable residents to maintaining local facilities and investing in our communities.
