Riverside Primary School in Meadow Well is celebrating the remarkable success of its new “Ready, Set, Breakfast Club”, which is already making a significant difference to pupils’ attendance, wellbeing and engagement.

Since launching in April as part of the national Free Breakfast Club Programme, the initiative has gone from strength to strength. Attendance across the school has risen by around 50%, with more than 80% of pupils now having taken part in at least one session.

The club has quickly become one of the most popular parts of the school day. In recent weeks, more than 100 pupils have been attending every morning representing around 70% of the school’s 152 pupils on roll.

Designed with pupils at its heart, Ready, Set, Breakfast Club has created a positive, welcoming start to the day. From its name — chosen by Year 4 pupil Emelie in a school-wide competition — to its energetic atmosphere, the initiative reflects the voices and needs of the children it serves.

Pupils benefit from:

  • A nutritious and varied breakfast, including fresh fruit, waffles and smoothies
  • A safe and inclusive space to socialise across year groups
  • Wellbeing-focused activities such as games and a morning dance workout
  • A strong identity through dedicated branding, aprons, badges and signage

The impact has been clear. The club is helping children to build positive routines, boost confidence and arrive in class ready to learn. It is also playing an important role in reducing anxiety and ensuring pupils begin the day in a calm and supportive environment.

As one of the school’s most successful recent initiatives, Ready, Set, Breakfast Club demonstrates how a well-designed, inclusive breakfast offer can have a powerful effect on children’s wellbeing and education with its consistently high attendance reflecting just how valued it has become by pupils and families alike.
