North Tyneside is part of the World Health Organisation’s Age‑Friendly Network. This means we are working together to make our borough a place where you can enjoy later life, stay independent and feel connected to your community. It’s part of our commitment to creating better lives for all, so that everyone can live a longer and healthier life.
Older residents are at the heart of this work and their views have helped choose three priorities for 2026–2027:
- Better outdoor spaces – safer, more welcoming streets and public places.
- Clear and accessible information – helping everyone find out about local services, activities and events, whether you are online or not.
-
Respect and social inclusion – more chances to meet people, get involved and have your voice heard.

Age UK North Tyneside is a developing a Neighbourhood Network in North Shields. Local volunteers will help people discover what is happening nearby, connect with activities and services, and meet others in their community.
The Older People’s Involvement Network (OPIN) gives older residents the chance to help shape Age‑Friendly North Tyneside and influence what happens next.
Could you get involved? If you would like to help connect people in your neighbourhood or share your views and experiences through OPIN, please email enquiries@ageuknortyneside.org.uk
Community Noticeboard – how you can help people stay connected
We are setting up a Community Noticeboard to help people who might not be online find out more about what’s happening in their area. You can sign up to a mailing list and each month we will email you simple, easy‑to‑read information like event posters, flyers and updates about local groups, activities and services.
If you work in a place that’s part of community life - like a pub, restaurant, community centre, shop, café, or health centre - you can print them and display them. You might want to print them at home, pop some in a window, or share them with friends, neighbours or family members.
Signing up helps more people stay connected and makes it easier for everyone to see what’s going on nearby. Please subscribe by clicking here.
Councillor Janet Hunter, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: "Making North Tyneside a great place to grow older is something I care deeply about. Our Age Friendly work is shaped by older residents themselves, and these priorities reflect what people have told us matters most - feeling connected, having clear information, and being able to enjoy safe, welcoming outdoor spaces.
"I’m especially pleased to see the new Neighbourhood Network and the Community Noticeboard taking shape. These simple ideas will help people stay informed, meet others and feel part of their community, whether they’re online or not.
"Thank you to everyone who is getting involved. Together we can make North Tyneside a place where people can live well, stay independent and feel valued at every age."
