North Tyneside officially celebrated the opening of its Veterans' Walkway on Saturday (20 June).
Working alongside the National Veterans’ Walk charity, North Tyneside Council is proud to have the first 50 stones laid around the cenotaph – creating a striking tribute to its armed forces.
The walkway features personalised granite plaques dedicated to serving and former armed forces personnel, bearing names, regiments and years of service. The project has been created as a lasting tribute to proud service and reflects North Tyneside’s strong military and maritime heritage.
Everyone who purchased a commemorative stone was invited to attend.
Cllr Andy Newman, North Tyneside Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “We’ve got a proud history in North Tyneside of supporting our armed forces personnel, and this walkway is a fitting tribute to the service of so many people with ties to our borough.
“It is wonderful to see the first phase completed, and I hope families and visitors will take time to reflect on the stories and service represented here.”
Orders are now being taken for the next phase of the walkway. The stones are priced at £299 each, available to order through the National Veterans’ Walk website at www.nationalveteranswalk.co.uk The names of those dedicated are also added to the National Veterans’ Walk Roll of Honour.
