October is just around the corner which means it’s that time of year when smokers are encouraged to consider taking on the challenge of Stoptober.
Around 350,000 people take part each year meaning if you commit to quit you won’t be alone. If you make it through the first 28 days, you’re five times more likely to quit for good.
Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and death, and quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health. When you stop, you’ll experience health benefits almost immediately.
North Tyneside Council's Director of Public Health Louise Gray said: "Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, and Stoptober is a fantastic opportunity to take that first step.
“Quitting can improve your physical health, boost your wellbeing, help you have a healthier future and save you some money.
“We know that stopping smoking is not always easy, but it's never too late to quit and you don’t have to do it alone. There is a range of free support available in North Tyneside, and I would encourage anyone thinking about quitting to use this Stoptober as the starting point of their smoke-free future and to take advantage of the help available".
