North Tyneside Council is once again showing its support for Wear Red Day, the annual day of action organised by Show Racism the Red Card, by lighting up St Mary's Lighthouse and its Killingworth site in red.

This year's event marks the 12th anniversary of Wear Red Day, and the Council is proud to continue its long-standing support for the campaign.

The charity, one of the UK's leading anti-racism education organisations, has strong roots in North Tyneside and continues to be based in the borough.

North Tyneside Council's support for Wear Red Day builds on its wider work to promote equality and inclusion. The Ethnic Diversity Staff Network has helped shape the Authority's Anti-Racism Promise and action plan, and supported its successful application to become a Race Equality Matters Bronze Trailblazer.

This is part of a wider commitment to create a safe and inclusive workplace for all.

Elected Mayor of North Tyneside Karen Clark said: "We're proud to support Wear Red Day by lighting St Mary's Lighthouse and our Killingworth site red and standing alongside everyone working to challenge racism in our communities.

"We've supported the campaign for many years and, as Wear Red Day celebrates its 12th anniversary, it's a reminder of our commitment to creating a borough where people feel welcome, respected and valued. With Show Racism the Red Card having such strong roots in North Tyneside, it's especially meaningful for us to show our support in this way.

"By lighting one of North Tyneside's most recognisable landmarks red, we're showing visible support for the campaign's message to change hearts, change minds and change lives."

The Lighthouse and Killingworth site will be illuminated in red on Friday 16 October to mark the campaign and demonstrate the Council's support for efforts to tackle racism and promote equality across the borough.

James Kingett, North East Education Team Manager, Show Racism the Red Card said: “It is really significant that North Tyneside Council are once again using the opportunity of Wear Red Day to send a positive message of allyship and support to those across the area who experience racism, prejudice and discrimination. These moments are as important as the ever have been and we thank everyone at North Tyneside Council for their continued support.”

Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity.

The charity works to challenge racism through empowering role models within communities, organisations, and sports, in order to dismantle racism in society.

Wear Red Day is a UK-wide act of allyship and solidarity with those who sadly still experience racism within our communities.

2026 is the 12th Anniversary of Wear Red Day. The first celebration in 2014 saw 7,000 people registering to take part. In 2024, that figure had exploded to become 710,000 participants celebrating with Show Racism the Red Card, sending a positive anti-racism message and making a stand against racism.
