Members of the public can now have their say on the sites being considered for development and draft policies as part of preparation of North Tyneside’s new Local Plan.

The Local Plan is a long-term strategy and policy tool for where development will and won’t occur in North Tyneside up to 2042. It is an important document that will help protect and provide new green spaces, enable delivery of homes in line with the Government’s housebuilding targets and create employment opportunities and the infrastructure required to support sustainable growth.

The Local Plan must follow national policies and guidance and respond to local issues and priorities in North Tyneside – especially those in the Council’s ‘Our North Tyneside Plan’ – strengthening the unique qualities that make North Tyneside a great place to live, work and visit.

The new Local Plan will ensure the Borough continues to grow sustainably, protecting existing green spaces whilst responding to the need for more decent and affordable housing and economic growth. A key focus of this plan is creating accessible green spaces that residents and visitors of all ages can enjoy and make the most of whilst supporting the Borough’s wildlife.

Without a Local Plan, the borough would have far less control over development, which could put these important areas at risk and make it harder to plan for the infrastructure that we need.

The first stage of consultation on the new Plan took place in August 2025, inviting views on the overall vison for North Tyneside.

Feedback from the first phase has helped to inform the Plan and its policies. Residents can now share their views on the possible sites for future development that are now being considered. These sites have been chosen to help meet future housing and employment needs while protecting North Tyneside’s unique character and environment.

The consultation will begin on January 14 and will run until Wednesday 25 February 2026.

Information about the consultation will be available through a range of online and printed sources, including the Our North Tyneside website. Officers will be holding a number of events for residents to find out more.

Final proposals will be considered by Council later in 2026, before being submitted to the government for examination in public prior to the new Plan’s expected adoption in late 2027 or early 2028.
