More than 1,000 children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have taken part in activities this summer, thanks to an expanded programme developed in response to feedback from local families.
From adapted cinema screenings and specialist gymnastics sessions to sensory experiences, science activities and visits from exotic animals, the programme has provided a wider range of accessible opportunities than ever before for children and young people with SEND.
Delivered as part of our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, the enhanced SEND offer was shaped by parent carers, children and young people who called for more choice, greater accessibility and activities tailored to a wider range of needs.
A major addition this year has been a dedicated sensory room for children and young people with more complex needs, alongside a new indoor and outdoor space that families and groups can book to enjoy in a safe and supportive environment.
The programme has also introduced opportunities for children and young people to experience popular activities in ways that work for them, including adapted cinema screenings, quieter sessions at children's attractions and gymnastics sessions designed specifically for young people with SEND.
Science workshops and visits from animal experts have provided opportunities to learn, explore and build confidence, while spending time with friends and family in inclusive settings.
The expanded offer has helped more than 1,000 SEND children and young people access activities during the summer holidays, creating opportunities to try new experiences, develop skills and make lasting memories.
Councillor Peter Earley, North Tyneside Council's Cabinet Member for supporting and protecting children, said:
"Every child and young person deserves the opportunity to enjoy their summer holidays, have fun and take part in activities that meet their needs and interests. We have listened carefully to families and used their feedback to shape a programme that is bigger, more inclusive and offers more choice than ever before.
"The fact that more than 1,000 children and young people with SEND have been able to access activities this summer is a fantastic achievement. It shows what can happen when we work together with families, providers and partners to remove barriers and create opportunities that enable every child and young person to thrive."
We will continue to work with families, schools and community partners to develop inclusive opportunities for children and young people with SEND throughout the year.
