Loan Equipment Service helping thousands stay independent at home

Thousands of North Tyneside residents are being supported to live safely and independently at home thanks to the council’s Loan Equipment Service.

Over the past year, the service has delivered almost 28,000 items of equipment to 18,000 residents, with 94% of deliveries made within seven days.

It has also played a key role in supporting nearly 3,000 hospital discharges, helping people return home safely and without delay.

The service provides essential equipment for people of all ages, from children through to end-of-life care, ensuring support is available at every stage of life. This includes practical items such as toilet frames to support safe movement and shower seats for those who are unable to stand for long periods.

By providing the right equipment at the right time, the service helps many residents remain independent in their own homes, often reducing or removing the need for additional care.

As well as improving day-to-day quality of life, the Loan Equipment Service plays an important wider role across the health and care system. It helps prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, supports timely discharge, and reduces longer-term care needs.

The service also delivers strong value for money, with a focus on recycling and refurbishing equipment to minimise waste and costs.

Together, these efforts are making a meaningful difference to residents and supporting North Tyneside’s continued strong performance in delivering effective, joined-up care.
