Residents, businesses, landowners and other stakeholders are being invited to take part in the final stage of public consultation on North Tyneside Council’s new Local Plan.
The draft Local Plan has been updated following consideration of more than 4,100 consultation comments received from residents, businesses, community organisations, landowners and statutory consultees during earlier engagement on the Initial Draft Local Plan.
The Local Plan is a long-term strategy for where development will and will not take place in North Tyneside up to 2042. It sets out how future housing, employment and infrastructure needs can be met while protecting the Borough's environment, heritage and unique character.
Having an up-to-date Local Plan is essential to ensure North Tyneside can plan positively for future growth and investment. The plan provides the framework for deciding planning applications and helps ensure new development is delivered in the right locations, supported by the infrastructure and services communities need.
Without an up-to-date Local Plan, councils have less control over where development takes place and can become more vulnerable to speculative planning applications. This can make it more difficult to protect valued local assets and ensure development reflects the needs and priorities of local communities.
This consultation provides an opportunity for people to comment on whether they feel the draft Local Plan aligns with national planning policy and can be delivered effectively.
Following feedback from the previous consultations, some site allocations have been removed or amended. Land south of Dudley Lane has been removed as a proposed housing allocation and is now identified as safeguarded land. Land rear of Regent Court and Marden Quarry have also been removed from the proposed allocations.
The draft plan introduces a clearer approach to safeguarded land following public feedback and further assessment of environmental and heritage considerations.
The consultation is now open and will run for six weeks. A number of in-person events will also take place across the borough:

All consultation documents, supporting evidence and details of how to respond will be available at haveyoursay.northtyneside.gov.uk, with information also provided through a range of digital and printed channels.
Following completion of the consultation, the Council will consider any representations received before submitting the Local Plan to the Government for independent examination.
