Following a public consultation, North Tyneside Council has confirmed its decisions on proposed parking changes in Whitley Bay.
The Council has decided not to introduce a charge at The Playhouse Car Park. In addition, the first Resident Parking Permit in shared-use parking zones across the Borough will continue to be free.
However, after considering all the feedback, charges will be introduced at Park Road Car Park, with the associated Traffic Regulation Order now formally approved.
The changes at Park Road Car Park are designed to:
- Increase turnover of spaces, making it easier for visitors and shoppers to find a spot
- Improve access and convenience for local businesses and community facilities
- Support the maintenance and regeneration of parking spaces
- Encourage fair and consistent parking management across the Borough
The changes follow a review of parking management aimed at providing consistent, well-managed parking, supporting local businesses, and contributing to town centre upkeep.
Measures will remain in place to ensure accessibility, including Blue Badge exemptions, alternative nearby parking, and school pick-up/drop-off support. The Council will also monitor the scheme during its first year to address any unintended impacts.
These changes support the Council’s wider ambitions under the Our North Tyneside Plan 2025–2029, promoting places to be proud of, sustainable transport, safe neighbourhoods, and vibrant town centres.
