Celebrating Shared Lives Carers in North Tyneside

Across North Tyneside, Shared Lives Carers make a remarkable difference by welcoming adults who need extra support into their own homes, offering not just practical help but genuine belonging.

The scheme allows people to live as part of a family, learn new skills and grow in confidence, all while enjoying the warmth and routine of everyday life.

It’s a role defined by empathy, patience and a belief that everyone deserves a place to thrive.

Among those making an incredible impact are Jade and Adam, currently two of the youngest Shared Lives Carers in the borough.

Their decision to take on the role was inspired by Jade’s Nana, who was a Shared Lives Carer for many years.

Seeing the joy and purpose the role brought to her Nana’s life encouraged them to explore it too, and they now support Jo and Lisa, who live with them as part of their family.

Jade and Adam say it’s “fantastic” how naturally Jo and Lisa have fitted into their lives. They enjoy many of the same things, from trips into the city centre for a drink and a dance, to nights in watching horror films, holidays away, and cosy days relaxing at home.

They all share the daily household chores together too including putting the bins out, clearing up after tea, loading the dishwasher and even helping care for the family dog.

For Jade, the Shared Lives experience has been transformative, and she wishes more people knew about the scheme. She understands that caring for someone full time might seem daunting at first, but she wants people to know that “your life doesn’t have to stop, it’s actually improved by the people you support.”

Jade, Adam, Jo and Lisa are a testament to how Shared Lives can create stronger, happier lives for everyone involved.

Carers receive full training, ongoing support and regular guidance to help them feel confident and well-prepared every step of the way.
