A state-of-the-art sports hub in North Tyneside has achieved a national award.

St Peter’s Sports Hub, off the Coast Road, in North Tyneside won the Facility Development accolade at The FA’s Recognition Awards at Wembley Stadium.

The £4.4 million venue, which is home to Northumberland FA and was funded by the Football Foundation and North Tyneside Council, with contributions from Northumberland FA, The FA and Rugby Football League, includes a state-of-the-art 3G pitch and pavilion building.

The awards recognise the best projects from County FA’s across the country and St Peter’s beat off stiff competition to take the prize.

Northumberland FA Chief Executive, Andrew Rose-Cook, said: “Since the venue opened earlier this year we have welcomed dozens of teams – and thousands of players, coaches, referees and spectators to this game-changing site. It has helped us to put on innovative programmes, for example helping people with disabilities to enjoy football, and I am delighted that this has been recognised with a national award from The FA.”

Councillor Hannah Johnson, Cabinet Member for the Environment, with responsibility for sport and leisure, said: “This award is a fantastic endorsement of what the new sports hub brings to North Tyneside. It’s more than a new pitch or pavilion – it’s a place where people come together, get active and feel supported. We’re proud to have helped deliver a facility that’s already making a real difference, and I’m looking forward to seeing even more teams, volunteers and families benefit from it in the years ahead.”

The 6.8-hectare site was officially opened in March and boasts a super sized, floodlit artificial grass pitch, four changing rooms (including one large enough for rugby teams), officials' changing rooms, community and training rooms, and kitchen facilities.

Visitors will find improved parking, a new dog-walking area, and upgraded fencing to enhance the space.

The St Peter’s Sports Hub is now a central part of North Tyneside’s sports infrastructure, serving as the new headquarters for Northumberland FA. It will also act as a premier training ground for local football and other sports teams, fostering health, fitness, and community engagement for years to come.
