A new service has launched in North Tyneside to help residents who face complex barriers to employment find and keep sustainable work.

Connect to Work, funded by the UK Government through the North East Combined Authority is aimed at people who may be out of work due to disability, long-term health conditions, or other challenges such as caring responsibilities, homelessness, or past offending. Neurodivergent residents are a key focus, with tailored one-to-one support available for up to a year.

Connect to Work is based on the Supported Employment model which follows the principle of “place, train, maintain”, giving people help from the very start of their journey into work and continues to provide coaching and guidance while they’re in a job.

Employers are also being encouraged to take part, with benefits including a pool of committed candidates, advice on reasonable adjustments, and ongoing job coaching to ensure success for both employee and business.

Councillor Steven Phillips, Cabinet Member responsible for Education, Inclusion, Employment and Skills said: “Connect to Work is a great opportunity to break down barriers and support those facing unemployment into work. People who might otherwise struggle to find work that suits their skills and interests can be supported through their entire journey of finding and keeping work, benefitting both people and businesses.”

Residents can find out more by visiting a Working Well Hub, calling 0191 643 2288, or emailing workingwell@northtyneside.gov.uk. Employers interested in getting involved can also contact the team directly.
