The community in Burradon and Camperdown is celebrating the completion of improvement works at Fryer’s Millennium Green, a village space for everyone to enjoy.
Delivered in partnership with Burradon and Camperdown Community Association, North Tyneside Council has transformed the Green with flowering trees, wildflower meadow and new planting, a reinstated circular path with deep-cleaned walkways, and the installation of a disabled access ramp. Shrub clearance has revealed a much-loved community artwork created by Burradon Primary School almost 25 years ago.
The Green is now open to the public and all are welcome to use it.
This investment is part of North Tyneside Council’s Ambition for the North West of the Borough, creating places to be proud of and neighbourhoods that enhance lives.
Chris Wray, Chair of Burradon and Camperdown Community Association, said: "Fryer’s Millennium Green is an important part of the story of Burradon and Camperdown’s regeneration. Back in 1997 the area was derelict, and after reading about Millennium Greens being created elsewhere, we decided to set up a trust to redevelop the site. Burradon Primary School got involved, and the children helped design panels featuring their handprints. Almost 25 years on, I still meet people whose hands were featured, and they’re delighted that the improvement works have revealed this important community artwork again by cutting back shrubs around it.
"It is so important to have the Green maintained as a focal point in the village. Now it’s improved, it might encourage more community use and get events back on site. It’s a popular stop‑off for cyclists who ride in the area, and we hope more people will enjoy using it now."
"What is so great about the Burradon and Camperdown area is the way all the community groups work together, from our Mini Miners children’s group through to our pensioners’ association. The Community Association does a lot of work with many different groups in the village of all ages, there is a strong community here. The Green gives us an outdoor space to bring everyone together."
Elected Mayor of North Tyneside Karen Clark said: "It is wonderful to see the community coming together to celebrate these improvements to Fryer’s Millennium Green, it looks very smart and welcoming. We are committed to creating and maintaining places to be proud of and neighbourhoods that enhance lives right across North Tyneside.
“Burradon and Camperdown has a strong sense of community and I know the Green will be well used by the people who live here as well as those who visit the area. It is a lovely space to meet, relax and play, and a great space for community events.”
