Local Authorities are legally required by the Environment Act 2021 to demonstrate they are meeting their biodiversity duty as set out in Section 40 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 (as amended). This legislation strengthens the duty to conserve and enhance biodiversity in all our functions — from planning decisions to land management.
As part of this duty we must publish a report every five years. This report explains:
- actions taken to protect and enhance biodiversity
- future actions
- how we are meeting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements
