Allergens

Since 1 October 2021, all food businesses selling pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) foods must include full ingredient lists on product labels, with allergenic ingredients highlighted.

This change, or "Natasha's Law", followed the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction after eating a baguette without allergen information. PPDS foods are those packaged on-site before being sold or displayed, such as items from display units, behind counters, or at mobile outlets.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) provides guidance through its PPDS Hub. This includes a webinar and tailored guides for different business types, such as fast food and takeaways, cafes, and schools.
