Over 2,000 runners will gather this weekend to take part in one of the UK’s most scenic road races.
The North Tyneside 10k Road Race returns on Sunday (21 September) and celebrates 20 years of the race.
Starting at the Parks Sports Centre in North Shields, runners make their way along the Fish Quay, past Tynemouth Priory and along the coast before finishing at St. Mary’s Lighthouse.
The event, which is usually on Easter Sunday, is taking place later in the year after allowing for the completion of the new seafront cycleway.
Runners will temporarily share the cycle lane with cyclists for a very short distance while passing Browns Bay in Cullercoats. Later in the race runners merge into the cycle lane at the zebra crossing just past the Tavern & Galley (formerly the Brierdene pub) and stay in the cycle lane until the final stretch of road towards the finish line. This short section of the cycle lane will temporarily close to cyclists between 9.30am - 11.30am to allow for runners to finish the race safely.
Entrants receive a branded race t-shirt, their winning time by text message and video clips of them crossing the finishing line.
Organised by North Tyneside Council and supported by Start Fitness and Clearly Drinks, the race attracts runners from across the country and is part of this year’s North Shields 800 celebrations.
Entries for the 2026 race will open soon.
