Residential parking

Residential permit parking

Why do we need residential permit parking?

Residential permit parking schemes are for areas where residents have problems with street parking. These problems can be caused in many ways. For example, there may be a large factory whose workers use the streets for parking, or shoppers may park in areas close to town centres. The aim of the scheme if to protect the parking facilities in that area for the residents.

However, no one is guaranteed a parking place even when a scheme is in force. But you will have much more chance of being able to park close to your home. Even if you do not own a car yourself, you may need a permit to allow your visitors to park their vehicle nearby. Any vehicle parked in a permit area without a permit may be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

What is a ‘specified property'?

When a residential permit parking scheme is created, the council has to implement a Traffic Regulation Order. In this order, the properties affected by the scheme are listed. These are the ‘specified properties' and only residents at these properties qualify for permits. If your property is not specified in the order, you do not qualify for residential permits under this scheme.

Residential parking scratch cards

Scratch cards are used for residents who live within a parking permit area within the borough. The cards are currently available for the Tynemouth, North Shields and Benton areas.

This will be expanded in the near future to cover Wallsend, Whitley Bay. It is not compulsory for residents of permit areas to have scratch cards for visitor parking.
