Do I need to use any new software
You may need to download an up-to-date browser that supports 128-bit encryption. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 onwards supports this. Some browsers that have 128-bit encryption are listed below. If your browser does not support this level of encryption, you can click on one of these browsers to upgrade your browser or select an alternative:
What can I pay online?
You can pay for Council Tax, National Non Domestic Rates, Council Housing Rent, Sundry Debt, Mortgage, Private Tenants Overpayments, Council Tenants Overpayments, Car Parking Fines and Planning Applications when applying online.
Is it safe?
Yes it is safe. Your transaction will take place within a secure payment system. We use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology, a standard supported by major Internet browsers. This means that all of your personal and card details are protected by 128-bit encryption (encoding) when transmitted over the Internet. Your browser must support 128-bit encryption for it to work securely.
If you are in a public place we strongly advise you to make sure that you are not overlooked when you enter your details, to prevent them being misused by somebody else.
What if it doesn't work?
If you cannot get into the payments page when you click on "Make a payment", this is probably because your browser doesn't support 128-bit encryption. You are therefore prevented from making a payment since anything less than 128-bit is considered unsafe. In order to make the online payment, you may have to update your browser's encryption, or use another browser. This can be very easy to do and need not cost you anything - details are given above. Can I check how much I owe?
Online balances are available for Council Tax, NNDR and Sundry Debtors.
Your balance will be displayed as part of the payment process, simply enter your account details as you would for making a payment.
Once you receive your balance, you can continue to make a payment or use the Cancel button to leave the payment page without making an actual payment.
Balances are updated on a daily basis – payments through other payment methods can take up to 48 hours to be included in this balance.
If you require a balance for any other bill, please contact the relevant council department.
When will my payment be processed?
Although you can make online payments at any time, your payment can only be credited to your account during the week. Payments taken over the weekend and on bank holidays will be credited to your account the next working day.
All payments paid up to 3.45pm (15.45) on a normal working day will be credited to your account on the next working day. All payments taken after that time will be processed on the following working day.
Which cards do you accept?
You can pay by Visa, MasterCard, Visa Delta, Switch, Solo, Electron and Maestro. We regret we do not accept payments by American Express or Diners Club.
Can I have a receipt?
You will receive details of your payment on your screen after you make the payment. You can print this out as confirmation. If you provide us with an email address, we will also send confirmation of your payment to that email address.
What if my card is refused?
North Tyneside Council does not refuse cards - they are refused by your bank. There are many reasons why this may happen and we suggest you contact your bank directly.
Paying By Direct Debit
If you don't wish to pay your bills using your debit or credit cards, you can always pay by Direct Debit. Save yourself time and money, call the Council's Direct Debit Hotline number 0191 200 6609. Just give your bank details and we'll do the rest.
The Council has a number of dates you can choose to pay your Council Tax by Direct Debit. You can choose to pay on 1st, 8th, 15th and 25th of each month. Additionally on 8th and 25th you can opt to pay either over 10 or 12 monthly payments.
The Direct Debit guarantee
This Guarantee is offered by all Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme. The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank and Building Society.
If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, North Tyneside Council will notify you 14 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.
If an error is made by North Tyneside Council or Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
You can cancel a Direct Debit at anytime by writing to your Bank or Building Society. Please also send a copy of your letter to The Council.
