Police

Northumbria Police is a statutory organisation whose aim is to reduce crime and disorder and provide an efficient and effective policing service to those who live, visit and work in the region. Northumbria Police Authority is a separate statutory body with responsibility for ensuring provision of efficient services and works together with Northumbria Police to achieve this.

Northumbria Police and the Authority have a duty to produce an annual local policing plan, setting out targets and priorities for the coming year. These take into account Government priorities, local trends and issues raised by the community during extensive consultation.

The force has 4 strategic priorities:

  • Tackling crime and anti social behaviour effectively
  • Making the most of police officers and police staff
  • Partnership to build a civil society
  • Making it happen

Northumbria Police is responsible for policing a diverse area spanning 2150 square miles, from Berwick in the north to Cumbria in the west and bordering County Durham in the south. The service employs 4000 police officers and 1550 police staff, with a resident population of 1.4 million, Northumbria Police is one of the largest forces in England and Wales. There are 6 area commands, each led by a Chief Superintendent, with a Chief Inspector responsible for partnership issues.

Northumbria Police is a partner of the North Tyneside Crime & Disorder Reduction and Misuse of Drugs Partnership and a senior officer sits on the board. We recognise the importance of working in partnership to achieve crime and disorder reduction. There are increased opportunities for effective partnership working, both at a local and borough-wide level. The dedication of resources at a senior level will improve partnership working and maximise the opportunities to make significant reductions in crime and disorder.
