North Tyneside Arts is the Council's arts development service - part of the Arts, Tourism & Heritage division of Cultural Services, within the Community Services directorate.

We work with a wide range of professional and voluntary arts organisations and individual arts practitioners, initiating and supporting projects in music, visual arts, drama, street and circus arts, new writing, public art commissioning, and digital and media arts. Part of our team is the Artistic Director for Whitley Bay Regeneration, artist Keith Barrett, who is working with local people and artists on a programme of activities in the town.

The major arts facility in North Tyneside is the 640-seat Playhouse at Whitley Bay, which re-opened in September following an £8.5 million refurbishment, and is managed on behalf of the local authority by SMG Europe. The Saville Exchange theatre in North Shields houses smaller-scale performing arts events and workshops. The Globe Gallery in North Shields is the main visual arts space and is currently home to a significant two-year young people's volunteering programme.

Working with young people is a priority. We have an extensive and long-standing partnership with Customs House in South Shields, who are the arts in education agency for the borough and also manage two major national programmes - Creative Partnerships and Find Your Talent - on behalf of both North Tyneside and South Tyneside Councils.
