Guarantee your vote - register!
30-JUL-10
Issued by: Jeanette Hedley
Voter registration forms will begin to be delivered to every North Tyneside household from Monday (August 2) as the borough's annual canvass of electors gets underway.
North Tyneside Council is required by law to carry out the yearly check that enables it to maintain the Electoral Register.
The register holds the names of all those eligible to vote within the borough on local, national or European polls.
Not being registered doesn't just deny residents their vote. It can also affect your credit rating, which means you may have problems applying for a loan or mortgage, bank or building society account, mobile phone contract, store finance or a catalogue.
Residents are being urged to respond as soon as they receive their form.
If there have been no changes to the details on the form - and no changes are anticipated by 15 October 2010 - then residents can confirm their registration via the telephone, text or online services.
The internet address, telephone and text numbers are given on your canvass form together with your unique security code which you will need in order to register. All services are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the duration of the canvass.
Reminder forms will be sent out in September to households that have not responded to the original form. At the beginning of October personal canvassers will visit those properties that have not responded to the first or second forms.
You can request a postal vote and make changes to the Edited Register during your telephone or Internet registration - you cannot do this using the text registration service. If the details on the form have changed in any other way, you must return the form in the envelope provided.
