Troublesome tenants received a rude awakening when North Tyneside Council and Northumbria Police paid them early morning visits.

Eight households in the North Shields area were visited by the local authority's Safer Estates Team and North Tyneside Area Command on Wednesday, July 28

It was the latest in a series of Operation Respect initiatives, which have been taking place across the borough aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour.

Six people were council tenants while the other two live in private rented accommodation. Offences include, affray, drunk and disorderly, theft, criminal damage, breach of the peace and perverting the course of justice.

The homes visited were in Padstow Road, Stonethwaite, Lanerwood, Bridge Road South, Wantage Avenue, Malton Crescent, Tonbridge Avenue and Pearson Place.

Those visited were warned that their tenancies could be at risk if further complaints are received while other action could be taken such as Anti-Social Behaviour Injunctions and Orders.

Police Community Support Officers and Safer Estates Officers also delivered letters to neighbouring residents, advising them of the joint action and encouraging them to report any further anti-social behaviour they witness.

Colin Boxshall, Safer Estates manager, said: "We won't hesitate to take action against those who make life a misery for others.

"These joint operations with the police are making a big difference within communities and increasing residents' confidence in our ability to tackle the minority that are causing problems.

"We are committed to the Respect standard which commits the council to doing all it can to tackle anti-social behaviour and create a culture of respect."

Inspector Geoff Cross, of North Shields Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We take all reports of anti-social behaviour and disorder very seriously as we know it affects the quality of life for residents.

"The vast majority of people living in our communities want to enjoy living in peaceful neighbourhoods so it 's important that police work with North Tyneside Council's Safer Estates Team to act on complaints.

"This is at the heart of the action we are taking now, as part of this latest Operation Respect, in North Shields.

"If anyone has any concerns about crime or disorder in their community, then please contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team on 03456 043 043 ext 69191 so we can take further action."

Earlier this month Operation Respect received regional recognition at the Stadium of Light. Colin Boxshall and PC Damian Ramsay, a Neighbourhood Beat Manager from Forest Hall, delivered a presentation to more than 100 delegates representing housing providers throughout the region.
