Older people in North Tyneside are being invited to dance the afternoon away at two events next month.

North Tyneside Council has organised two tea dances in support of the Widening Horizons 4 Sport initiative.

A tea dance, aimed particularly at people with Alzheimer's, their carers, family and friends, will be held at North Shields Methodist Church, Hawkey's Lane, on Tuesday, August 17, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

All are welcome to attend a second tea dance, which will be held at the Meadows Community Centre, Meadowell, on Tuesday, August 24, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The entertainment will include four-piece musical quartet,

A £1 donation will be requested at both events, which goes towards the refreshments that will be available.

Cllr Glynis Barrie, cabinet member for Community Services, said: "Although a lot of the Widening Horizons 4 Sport are aimed at youngsters, we want people of all ages to get involved.

"These tea dances are an opportunity for older residents to have fun and get active as well as make new friends in a relaxed and informal setting."

Notes to editors:

The tea dances has been organised by the council's Sport Development Team as part of its Sports Inclusion Project. The project
began in January and is funded by Sport England. It aims to provide sporting opportunities for people over-16 in five key groups: women; disabled people; over 45s; disadvantaged areas and black and ethnic minority groups.

Widening Horizons 4 Sport forms part of the Widening Horizons 4 All initiative, which aims to provide a broader, richer set of opportunities for the residents of the borough, in particular young people.

There are key three programmes: Widening Horizons 4 Sport, Widening Horizons 4 Arts and Widening Horizons 4 Culture.

Widening Horizons 4 Arts began in March when the Year of the Arts was launched at the PLAYHOUSE Whitley Bay, sponsored by the Evening Chronicle.
