North Tyneside Council is bringing a splash of colour to the borough - which will soon boast around half-a-million flowers.

The local authority recently planted new flower bulbs including crocuses, daffodils, tulips and snowdrops.

Well over 300,000 naturalised bulbs, which can be found on roadside verges, and in excess of 280,000 spring flowers and bulbs planted in flower tubs and beds are set to bloom from March to June.

Cllr Ed Hodson, cabinet member for the Environment, said: "We aim to make living in North Tyneside a great experience, where our neighbourhoods are clean, green and safe.

"One way we do this is by ensuring our floral displays are continuously developed and frequently maintained.

"The wintery weather has delayed this year's flowers coming into bloom, as last year the daffodils were flowering in early December.

"But the roadside naturalised bulbs are now starting to emerge and it will not be too long before the borough is in full bloom."

The council will continue to build on its previous planting programmes, with an additional 230,000 summer flowers.
