North Tyneside Council has awarded North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards (NSVL) the Whitley Bay Town Cup.

Chairman of the Council, Cllr Michael Huscroft, presented the cup to the winner at the full meeting of North Tyneside Council.

And NSVL's Chairman, Richard Fahey, from Whitley Bay, was delighted to accept the trophy.

He said: "It's a great honour to receive this award on behalf of North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards, as it recognises the contribution that all our of volunteers have made over the past 11 years.

"Their dedication helps to train 100 rookie lifesavers per week and dozens of beach lifeguards each year, as well as benefiting several other North Tyneside groups.

"I must thank North Tyneside Council as they have always supported us in meeting our objectives and I hope that our partnership continues and prospers."

The local authority presents the prestigious trophy to any organisation or individual of the town who has brought about an outstanding event in the last year, or has been of outstanding service to the community.

Councillors who represent wards in the seaside town considered nominations and recognised the positive work carried out by the NSVL with the community and the valuable training they provide.
