Runners are being advised they need to be quick off the mark if they want to compete in this year's North Tyneside 10K Road Race.

Limited places are available for the race, which takes place on Easter Sunday 4 April 2010, and is a contender for one of the UK's most scenic road races.

The closing date for entries is Friday 12 March or when the limit of 2,000 entries has been reached.

The race begins at The Parks Sports Centre in North Shields and takes in locations, taking in the Fish Quay, and some truly stunning locations including Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and a long stretch of coastline before finishing at St Mary's Lighthouse.

Cllr Glynis Barrie, cabinet member for Community Services, said: "The North Tyneside 10K Road Race is now in its sixth year and always receives a fantastic response from individuals and running clubs from throughout the UK.

"Due to the nature of the route, there is a strict limit of 2,000 participants so we are urging people to avoid disappointment and get their entries in quickly."

Last year's race was won by Mongolian Serod Batochir in 31 minutes and 33 seconds. The first female over the finishing line was Angela Hibbs in a time of 36 minutes and 48 seconds.

The 6.5-mile run is organised by North Tyneside Council in partnership with Start Fitness and North Shields Polytechnic. It is supported by Hadrian Spring Water who will be providing the drinking water throughout the race.

The entry fee for a UK Athletics Club member is £12 and a non-club member fee is £14. There is a range of prizes, both for individuals and teams. Each person taking part will receive a goody bag at the end and participants must be aged over 15 years.
