Mayoral elections

North Tyneside voters have elected Linda Arkley as the borough's new Mayor.

Counting the votes at the mayoral elections uses a form of proportional representation known as the supplementary vote system. This allows for a first and a second choice vote.

The total number of first choice votes given for each of the six candidates was:

  • Linda Arkley (Conservative Party) - 24,784
  • Robert Nigel Batten (National Front Britain for the British)- 1,086
  • John Burrows (British National Party - Protecting British Jobs) -3,398
  • Martin Collins (Green Party) -1,995
  • John Harrison (Labour Party) - 19,823
  • Nigel John Huscroft (Liberal Democrat) -7,343

As no candidate had received over 50 percent of votes after the first count, the top two candidates - Linda Arkley and John Harrison - went through to a second stage in the count.

The total number of votes for these candidates following consideration of second choice votes was:

  • Linda Arkley - 27,083 (Elected)
  • John Harrison - 22,634

Turnout was 38.35%
