Benefits: What is housing and council tax benefit?
North Tyneside Council is responsible for administering these benefits for people living in the borough on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.
These benefits are means tested welfare benefits. This means that a person's income and savings will affect the amount of benefit that is paid.
In addition to this, a person's individual circumstances, along with the circumstances of any person living in the household also determines the amount of benefit that is paid.
- Housing benefit is a contribution towards a person's housing costs, it is sometimes called rent rebate or rent allowance and is available to people who have to pay rent for the home they live in.
- Council tax benefit is available to people who have to pay council tax for the home they live in.
Both benefits are usually paid from the Monday after we get your form, therefore it is important to claim as soon as possible.
